Background

Hunter-trapper education is required in Pennsylvania prior to obtaining a license.  As excerpted from the Hunting & Trapping Digest, “Persons who have not held a hunting license issued in Pennsylvania or another state or nation, or do not possess a training certificate, are required to attain certification in an accredited hunter-trapper education program before applying for a hunting license.”  In Pennsylvania a person must be 11-years old to obtain a training certificate and 12-years old by June 30th to obtain a Junior License for that year.

In addition to the basic HTE course, the Pennsylvania Game Commission offers optional courses in Bow Hunting, Turkey Hunting and Trapping. These courses are offered to enhance the varied hunting and trapping skills of participants, as well as to provide the certification which is required in many hunting venues other than Pennsylvania, prior to licensing.

Since the resumption of hosting Game Commission HTE classes in the spring of 2008, we have held nineteen Basic HTE class at which over 600 students have received their certifications. Beginning in 2012, Falls Rifle became a host site for the Game Commission Successful Bowhunting course. We have now held two Successful Bowhunting Field Days at which over 50 students have been certified.

The Programs

The Basic Hunter-Trapper Education course includes an online, self-study component, followed by a classroom component of 6-hours of instruction, followed by a written certification exam. Some venues may present the classroom material in two or three evenings. Here at Falls Rifle, we present the classroom material in a single Saturday or Sunday. The online component must be completed prior to attending the classroom portion or the student will risk failing the course and not being certified. The Basic course involves no cost or fee to the student.

Similar to the Basic HTE course, the Successful Bowhunting course has both online components and in-person classroom/field exercise components, followed by a certification examination. However, the Bowhunting class differs in that the online portion is mandatory. The PGC website will not allow a student to enroll in the in-person field day until they have completed the online portion, as well as paid a fee.

Schedule

To attend a HTE class, pre-registration is required. This must be done online at the Game Commission web site. There you will find instructions for registering for courses being held anywhere in the Commonwealth, including those held at Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association. You will also find instructions and materials for taking the online portions of the courses. Again, the online portion must be completed prior to attending the class in person.
